How effective is LASER ACNE treatment?

Monday, March 21st, 2011

flyingGOAT asked:

I’ve tried many creams and over the counter products, I’ve gotten prescription cream from dermatologists, and I even used Proactiv Solution before (which didn’t work for me).

So, I’m looking into getting laser-acne treatment, which I’m hoping would be my last resort.

I have a mild case of acne on my face, nothing severe though.

So before getting laser acne treatment, could someone tell me if its effective at all? Like does it completely rid of the acne
after the procedure is done? How does it work and how much does it cost?
And please, no answers suggesting I use creams or creams they you know of that work.
I have been following this type of treatment for a LONG time now, and I am definitely gonna try laser treatment.

Also, I’m using laser treatment for my entire face.

Treating Acne – Laser Acne Treatment 101

Acne is one of the most common problem teenagers are facing today. Adolescents are more prone to it because of the active hormonal changes present during the adolescent stage, this stimulates the oil glands to produce more sebum (oil produced by the adrenal glands to keep our skin moist) which gets trapped in our pores. With the presence of bacteria it creates the familiar swelling known as blackhead, whitehead or pimple. The good news is, for some cases acne disappear as you grow older.

The severity of infection varies from person to person, some worse than others. If not treated, acne will leave an ugly scar in your skins which are hard raised areas on the skin’s surface or pits of different depths.

There are different methods of treating acne and one of the most effective and has immediate results is laser treatment.

Laser acne treatment usually starts out with a review of your medical history and your physician will ask for any medication that you’re currently taking (this is important to determine if it is safe for you to undergo the treatment). The area needing attention will then be cleaned and a gel will be applied, your physician will then start the treatment by gliding the laser hand piece on the areas needing treatment. Depending on the size of the area that needs attention, each session could take up to 20 minutes.

How Does Laser Help Treat Acne?

An FDA approved laser system called Aura targets an organic compound produced by the Propionibacterium Acnes (p. acnes) bacteria called Porphyrin. This is done by delivering laser light impulses through the infected skin’s surface. These Porphyrins generate singlet oxygen 102 when targeted by the light pulses; this kills the p. acnes bacteria causing the infection.

The number of treatments needed will vary depending on the severity of the infection but it usually starts with a twice a week session for two weeks. Future sessions will then be determined by your physician depending on the outcome of the initial treatment.

Most people get good results after two weeks of treatment and rarely had to undergo another session, some people are unlucky though that repeated treatments are needed to maintain the desired result. There is no question about the effectivity of this procedure, recent clinical study shows that patient’s acne became 81% less severe following the treatments.

Is Laser Treatment Painful?

It will feel like a rubber band snapping against your skin but will be a bit more uncomfortable for severe conditions. A topical anesthetic may be advisable to make it easier. A normal swelling and redness on the treated areas will be noticeable after every session but it eventually fades out after a few days.

Costs associated with the procedure will vary depending on the physician or treatment centers that are offering the service. However the costs are usually outweighed by the benefits of undergoing a laser treatment. It provides a quick and noticeable result in as little as two weeks and if you follow your doctor’s advice in preventing future infections, you will not see any reason for you undergoing another treatment.

Acne is a problem that is more difficult to live with these days. More adults have to deal with this than before. Treatment options are available that were not so prevalent years ago. Many of the treatments are showing success but others are not working so well. The secret to finding the right treatment is looking at the severity of the acne you have and your skin type. One such treatment option is the laser acne treatment.

Difficult Acne

A few lucky acne sufferers can treat their acne successfully with drugs or over-the-counter applications. Many are not so lucky and need to move past the simple medications and products to other options. While they are wasting time using products that are not working, they could be working on a more positive way to remove the acne and scars left behind with laser acne treatment.

Doctors Recommendation

A physician or dermatologist will know what treatment is best for your particular acne problems. A few doctors will recommend the laser acne treatment at the beginning. This laser treatment is a quick way to get rid of the acne before it becomes a permanent fixture in your life. Once the acne gets rooted into the skin, treatment will be harder to accomplish.

Laser Acne Treatment For Scars

The laser acne treatment for scaring is more popular today because of its success in giving a beautiful face to those who have suffered from acne for years. This laser treatment technique is being recommended by doctors for acne treatment as well as preventatives and removal of scars. Erbium laser treatment is effective in healing scars that acne leaves behind.

The Cost To You For Treatment

Laser treatments are best for acne but can be a little expensive. Scientific alternatives for acne need to be completed during the active period of the acne. The use of this treatment option involves the use of crystals made from aluminum hydroxide. They are utilized as an abrasive that removes the damaged layers of skin. The dead skin cells are removed. These skin cells are the same ones that cause acne to spread and can be a hindrance to laser treatment. Even though this treatment is effective, it is only used on acne that is severe and not on acne that has the possibility to spread over a large area. The Aluminum hydroxide crystals work best in areas like the neck and back. Those areas are the ones that are harder to reach and need a faster treatment.

Time And Patience

Treatment for acne requires a large amount of patience and time before visible signs of results are present. Laser acne treatment is the quickest way and most effective way to get rid of acne scars and the acne itself. The Aluminum hydroxide crystals are good for use on scars that are shallow and should not be used on deep acne scars. Laser treatment for more severe acne and scars is the best solution for permanent clearing. You’ll have skin looking beautiful again.
